Nitrate

When testing for nitrates (NO₃^-) remember that some test kits give results that include both nitrates and nitrites. To get an accurate value for nitrate you must first subtract the value for nitrite to get the real result.

Fortunately, in many cases the nitrite value is 0.

The TetraTest for nitrate (NO₃^-) involves:

	First, taking 5 cc's of the sample and adding 14 drops from bottle #1, then shaking the vial gently.
	Second, adding 7 drops from bottle #2, and then shaking the vial gently.
	Third, adding 1 spoonful (this is from the tiny plastic spoon included with the test kit) of test powder, and then shaking the test vial for 20 seconds.
	Fourth, adding 7 drops from bottle #3, shaking the vial gently
	Fifth, waiting 10 minutes for development of the color.

Notice the huge affect saltwater has on the results. What happens when your salt level is between freshwater and saltwater (3%)? Notice the similarity in colors between the "TetraTest" nitrate and nitrite color charts.
